Frequently Asked Questions

About Electric Umbrella:

Electric Umbrella is a registered charity that creates a more inclusive society, celebrating difference and inspiring community connection. Through amazing workshops and show-stopping performances, on stage and in schools, we empower learning disabled and neurodivergent people, of all abilities, fostering confidence, skills, and leadership potential.

When you’re part of Electric Umbrella, the stage is always set, the lights are bright, and the show is always on!

Our Electric Umbrella community is made up of learning disabled people and everyone around them; friends, family, parents, siblings, and anyone else supporting them to take part.

We offer a range of in-person and online music sessions, both free-of-charge and paid-for. Many of our members attend multiple types of sessions, and in doing so develop valuable friendships and gain in confidence and skill set.

We also offer an Education Programme for both SEND and mainstream schools delivering a range of curriculum music & EDI workshop and performance opportunities.

Many of our in-person music sessions take place in our studio and arena at Marlowes Shopping Centre, Hemel Hempstead HP1 1DX, UK.

We also visit schools across Herts, Bucks and North London, and play gigs and festivals all over the country.

Our online activities are open to everybody everywhere.

Our Free Online Activities:

Our activities are designed to cater to different levels of engagement and experience.

Once you’ve registered, we have four regular online sessions that you can join:

Singalong:

The Electric Umbrella community is made up of learning disabled people and everyone around them; friends, family, parents, siblings, and anyone else supporting them to take part.

If you’re learning disabled and you love music, you will love our supercharged online sessions!

Our free activities run through the whole year except for:

  • a short break at Christmas.

  2. Fill out the form.

Of course! Whether you join our sessions to sing at the top of your lungs or to groove along to the beat, you will love being part of Electric Umbrella. Our sessions are always welcoming, and always inclusive.

To keep our sessions as interactive as possible we would encourage you to switch your camera on, so that everyone can see your beaming smile.

However, we understand that Zoom can sometimes be a little daunting at first, so it’s okay if switching your camera off feels better for you.

When you join Electric Umbrella, we ask you whether you are happy to have your photograph in marketing material. Because some of our members say no, we have to be very careful about posting images from our sessions on social media.  Therefore we ask members and their familes and supporters NOT to post any photos or videos on their own social media channels.  Any images posted by Electric Umbrella are always checked for photo consent before publication.

Yes, you can request a song for our Singalong programme using the form on the member free activities page when you’ve signed in to your EU account.

Our School Programmes:

Our School Programmes bring Electric Umbrella’s vibrant and inclusive energy into mainstream and SEND schools. These interactive workshops and performances are designed to celebrate difference, inspire creativity, and promote a culture of inclusion. Through engaging musical activities, students of all abilities work together to create memorable experiences that highlight the power of community and the joy of self-expression.

Our School Programmes are tailored to suit the needs of each school, offering a mix of workshops, performances, and collaborative projects. Whether we’re leading a group in creating an original song, putting on a live show, or fostering discussion on inclusion, our sessions are designed to be fun, impactful, and aligned with educational goals. These programmes help build confidence and encourage students to embrace their unique abilities while supporting a more inclusive school environment.

Our School Programmes go beyond typical workshops by integrating learning disabled and neurodivergent performers into every session. This unique approach not only provides students with a dynamic learning experience but also promotes understanding, empathy, and inclusion. By working alongside these performers, students gain valuable insights into the importance of celebrating difference and the strength of community.

Get in touch with our team at schools@electricumbrella.org.uk and we can discuss Electric Umbrella visiting your school.

To access our online activities, such as a National Assembly, Inclusion Academy or the Music Machine Broadcast, create a school account, and you will find links to join the sessions on your account page.

Our School Programmes offer students the opportunity to engage in creative expression while learning about inclusivity and diversity. These sessions encourage teamwork, boost confidence, and foster a positive school culture where every student feels valued. By participating in our programmes, schools can create an environment that champions the idea that everyone has something special to contribute.

Our School Programmes are designed for students of all abilities, from mainstream and SEND schools alike. Whether it’s through singing, playing instruments, or simply being part of the audience, every student is encouraged to participate in a way that suits their abilities. These inclusive sessions are adaptable, ensuring that everyone can take part and benefit from the experience.

For safeguarding reasons, interactive Zoom sessions require cameras to be on. However, schools and organisations who prefer not to use cameras can watch sessions via YouTube instead.

Our gigs vary a lot in terms of space available, times and places.  We try to make sure that everybody who wants to do so can perform, but there is not always room for everybody at everything.  When we get a booking, we usually put a call out to all members asking who would like to be involved.  If you can’t make it this time, don’t worry, because another gig will come along soon!

Of course! Whether you join our sessions to sing at the top of your lungs or to groove along to the beat, you will love being part of Electric Umbrella. Our sessions are always welcoming, and always inclusive.

At Electric Umbrella we have measures in place to keep everyone safe during our online sessions. You have to become a member to join our online sessions, and volunteers are in the background during every activity to manage entry and support interactions.

To make sure that everyone enjoys our online sessions we ask that everyone follows three simple rules:

  1. Always respect each other.
  2. Always look out for each other.
  3. Keep language appropriate and kind.

If you are uncomfortable about anything you see, hear or experience during an Electric Umbrella online session, please tell an Electric Umbrella representative immediately. You can also get in touch  by email at: info@electricumbrella.co.uk

We are keen to make our ticketed gigs as accessible as possible for everybody.  If we offer “Carer Comes Free” tickets, we would have to increase ticket prices substantially, which seems unfair and would be counter-productive. However, if you are performing at one of our gigs and need your carer while performing, then your carer doesn’t need a ticket.

Membership and Support:

Membership provides access to a range of activities that help build confidence, develop new skills, and connect you with a supportive community. Members also enjoy priority access to events and the chance to participate in live performances.

Free activities allow you to get involved in our community and experience our workshops at no cost. Premium sessions offer a more in-depth experience, including extended sessions, personalised support, and exclusive content.

To cancel or modify your membership, please contact us at info@electricumbrella.org.uk. Our team will assist you with any changes.
